Round 22 round-up

Round 22 round-up

Denis Keegan31 Mar - 11:34

The final whistle sounds!

There'll be time to reflect on the season in the coming days and there'll be much to be positive about! However, as we entered the final day, we had the outside chance of three top 2 finishes and the opportunity to affect results elsewhere. After a day of exciting and free scoring games the Women's ones, twos and Men's ones all made it into the top 2; and the rest of our teams, winning or losing, achieved comfortable league positions.

Despite the disappointment of their game being cancelled, the women's first team duly secured second place, just 2 points behind league winners Ipswich 3s. They have played some fantastic hockey and their free-scoring ways ( 77 goals) left them with a positive goal difference of 53! Not to be outdone, the women's second team overwhelmed a pugnacious Christchurch Ladies second team 6:0 and again could have scored more! It should be noted that they are just 3 behinf=d the ones in goals scored... We should lift a glass to BSE 6ths who surprisingly beat BSE 5s to allow us to leap over them into the runners-up position - it's been a fantastic run for the twos. The women's threes had another tough task against 4th placed Sudbury threes and despite a fighting performance, eventually succumbed 3:0. Yet again, lots to be positiver about and a 10th place position, equal on points with IES 3s. The prospects for next season are good.

It was left to the men's twos to play at home and a real challenge from league leaders Broadland exiles who needed a win to secure the title. A goal inside 20 seconds from the visitors wasn't the greatest of starts but solid play left the score at 1:0 at half-time. Unfortunately, another quick goal saw Exiles take control and rattle in four more for a 6:1 win. They are worthy winners and were presented with a bottle of Rum after the game as a token of recognition from FHC. With three men's teams playing back to back matches at Sudbury all three teams had the incentive of playing in front of so many players who arrived early or stayed late to cheer the teams on. The 4ths led the charge and took part in an entertaining match against Sudbury 4s. With so many new players, younger and older, they ran out 4:3 winners to finish 7th in league five. The threes followed on looking to create a winning sequence and their play overall deserved the three points. However, missed opportunities and lapses in concentration allowed a well drilled Sudbury threes team to grab the points with a 3:2 win. The result left them in 7th place which given their promotiion last season is no mean feat! The final game of the day at Sudbury saw the first team facing Sudbury 2s with the prize of 2nd place still possible if they could win and Colchester/IES lost elsewhere, however unlikely that seemed. Initially Sudbury looked to upset the odds with a very forceful opening that saw Felixstowe pressed back and uncharacteristically losing possession. Yet the team did not panic and slowly but surely asserted themselves and began to dominate possession and field position. After the first goal, one felt more would follow and three more produced a comfortable win. Once results from elsewhere filtered in, more cheers rang out with the news that the unlikely had happened and we'd finished a well deserved second!

The final day produced the perfect final 'sign-off' with the Men's twos' BBQ in the evening. With many players returning from the away games, the clubhouse was full and we saw out the season in suitable style. We can do it all again on the 26th April on club day!
